Waslat Hasrat-Nazimi

Journalist with a focus on human and women’s rights in Afghanistan, as well as migration issues in Europe

Waslat Hasrat-Nazimi, head of DW's Afghan Service, champions women's rights and migration issues, using her platform to shed light on Afghanistan's struggles and the Afghan diaspora’s experiences in Europe.

Waslat Hasrat-Nazimi is a German-Afghan journalist and author with over a decade of experience covering Afghanistan from both inside and outside the country. As the head of DW’s Afghan Service, her primary focus is providing free and unrestricted access to information for the Afghan people, particularly during times of political turmoil and conflict.

She has become a prominent voice in reporting on Afghanistan’s challenges and the experiences of its diaspora.

A passionate advocate for women's rights, Waslat uses her platform to raise awareness of the struggles women in Afghanistan face and the resilience they display in overcoming adversity. Her book, Die Löwinnen von Afghanistan (The Lionesses of Afghanistan), offers a powerful and intimate portrayal of Afghan women’s lives, telling the stories of courage and strength in the face of societal, political and cultural challenges.

Through these women's narratives, Waslat not only sheds light on their hardships but also celebrates their triumphs and contributions to Afghan society.

Her work goes beyond just journalism — she actively advocates for gender equality and is committed to amplifying the voices of those who are often unheard, particularly migrant women and people with international family histories.

Waslat’s deep personal connection to Afghanistan and her own experience as part of the Afghan diaspora have shaped her career and motivated her to build bridges between her two worlds. Whether through reporting, writing or public speaking, she continues to highlight the importance of women's rights, migration issues, and the power of independent journalism in promoting free speech and informed societies.
