Possible link to Mumbai
December 1, 2010Spanish police detained eight people in Barcelona late Tuesday and early Wednesday on charges of collaborating with Islamist terrorism. The eight men included seven Pakistanis and one person of North African origin.
They are suspected of forging passports and documents and sending them to al-Qaeda linked groups around the world, including the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which has been accused of plotting the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
The assault by gunmen on Mumbai's commercial capital killed 166 people.
Three other people - two Pakistanis and a Thai national - were detained in Thailand as part of the same "Operation Kampai."
The suspects were also charged with lending financial support to terrorist groups. Police searched several addresses in and around north Barcelona, seizing documents and computer materials.
