International media collaboration: "Deserted"

The European Union allocates billions of euros to North African nations to curb irregular migration to Europe. The documentary "Deserted – Europe’s Deadly Migration Policy" reveals consequences of this policy.

The film – co-produced by Deutsche Welle, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Lighthouse Reports, and Norddeutscher Rundfunk – is the product of months of research involving BR and Lighthouse Reports, as well as media outlets Der Spiegel, The Washington Post, Le Monde and El País.

Reporters – sometimes working undercover – were able to capture footage in Libya, Mauritania, and Morocco. They accompanied militias and obtained images of deceased migrants who had not survived the march under the scorching sun, some of whom were pregnant women and young children. The journalists filmed the arrests and removal of Black people and conducted interviews with survivors. The journalists conducted extensive research to follow up on leads that European governments have long been aware of what is happening in the North African desert. Nevertheless, the EU continues to conclude migration agreements with countries such as Tunisia or Mauritania.

DW will broadcast the documentary "Deserted – Europe's Deadly Migration Policy" in Spanish (November 7, 2024), English (November 9, 2024), and Arabic (November 11, 2024). It will also be available on YouTube and Facebook starting November 9, 2024.
