World in Progress: The fallout from Russia's war on Ukraine

In addition to the toll the fighting has taken on people in Ukraine, the UN and aid organizations have started sounding the alarm about how Russia's war will affect world hunger — Ukraine and Russia are two of the world's top crop producers. DW speaks to Martin Rentsch who works for the UN's World Food Program in Berlin. How bad is the humanitarian situation in Ukraine right now?

War and conflict, COVID-19, climate shocks, rising prices will push millions of people closer to starvation. A total of 44 million people in 38 countries are already on the brink of famine and global needs for humanitarian assistance are higher than ever.  

Cities like Mariupol and Kyiv are under shelling which makes it virtually impossible to deliver much needed food aid to residents.
