Lucas Cranach the Elder spent 45 years in Wittenberg as court painter to successive electors of Saxony. The Renaissance artist set up the most successful painting school of his era there, and also founded a print shop.

The latter was used by his friend Martin Luther to illustrate and publish his German-language version of the New Testament. Cranach’s old home and workplace are now open to the public.
