Winter Olympics in Turin

The 20th Winter Olympics kicked off on Feb. 10 in the northern Italian city of Turin with flag-bearers from 85 participating countries. Until Feb. 26, around 2,500 athletes will compete for 84 gold medals in 15 winter sports disciplines. Germany hopes to do even better than at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002, when it brought home 36 medals -- and again give its major competitors -- Norway and the United States -- a run for their money.
