Winds of change in Egypt
April 5, 2011Advertisement
Project goal: Harnessing the wind potential in Egypt's deserts
Project scale: 700 wind turbines in the Zafarana Wind Farm
Project goal: 1400 gigawatt hours of electricity per year
CO2 savings: Approx. 800,000 tons per year
Egypt's political landscape is changing, and with it, the population's environmental priorities. The Zafarana Wind Farm is the largest of its kind in Africa and one of the most productive wind parks in the world - not least because conditions on the west coast of the Red Sea are ideal all year round. Moreover, the university of Cairo offers a course on renewable energy, so the country has no shortage of technical know-how.
