White House adviser Kudlow suffers heart attack

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow has suffered a heart attack and is being treated at a Washington-area hospital.

Trump broke the news in a tweet sent minutes before he was scheduled to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

Later, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Kudlow was doing well and that doctors expect him to make a "full and speedy recovery."

Kudlow, 70, a longtime television pundit, was hired by Trump in March to replace Gary Cohn as director of the National Economic Council.

Kudlow was with the president at the G7 summit in Quebec on Friday and Saturday. In several media interviews on Sunday, he defended Trump after the president's trade spat with the summit's host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Former Reagan adviser

Kudlow, who is a Republican, served as an economic adviser to former President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s and also worked on Wall Street. He is an ardent advocate of "supply side" economic policies that focus on cutting taxes and reducing regulations.

Kudlow has previously acknowledged difficulties in his life, battling addictions to drugs and alcohol before getting sober more than 20 years ago.
