The Venice Dance Biennale opens next week in various theaters throughout the Italian city.

With 36 performances, five world premieres, seven European premieres, 20 choreographers, and 16 companies, the Biennale's newest section is making a name for itself in the dance world. Established in 1999, it now also aims to foster fresh talent with its "off" section dedicated to new and innovative works.

While the program includes Italian, Swedish and American companies, this seventh International Festival of Contemporary Dance focuses on two geographical areas in particular: Canada and Quebec, and Australia and New Zealand.

Featured highlights include performances by the Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, the Compagnie Marie Chouinard, and the Sydney Dance Company. Entitled "Capturing Emotions," its artistic director, Brazilian-born dancer and choreographer Ismael Ivo, says it reflects his belief that dance "is a workshop of human emotions and shared visions."

The Venice Dance Biennale runs through June 12.
