Welcome Back.Turkey is a country divided over faith, politics and identity. The separation of religion and state is anchored in the Turkish constitution.. but tensions have been growing in recent years between religious and secular Turks. Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan is accused of undermining the country's secular traditions. His moderate "Justice and Development Party" or AKP has passed a series of social and economic reforms. These paved the way for the EU's decision to start formal talks on EU membership for Turkey four years ago today. But many secular Turks complain about what they see the creeping "Islamisation" of their country. Especially the diehard followers of the man who laid the foundations of the modern Turkish republic in 1924 - Kemal Attaturk.
