The SPD as opposition - increasing calls for leadership changes and new strategies

The low voter turn out was another significant aspect of the German elections. At just over seventy percent - it was a historic low - almost five percent down from last time. Analysts say many SPD voters stayed away. This only partially explains the party's drubbing. It dropped 11 percent of its vote share - largely to the benefit of the Left Party. In recent years, the Social Democrats have alienated some of their voter base by its centrist policies and unpopular reforms. Now, as the party goes into the opposition - there are increasing calls for leadership changes and new strategies.
