The Righteous Among the Nations - Rescuing Jews During the Holocaust
January 27, 2015"He who saves even one life saves the whole world," says the Talmud. People in many places aided their Jewish fellow citizens when they were being disenfranchised and persecuted by the Nazis. They did not look away - they helped, although they put themselves in danger by doing so. They gave Jews refuge, helped them to escape or managed to get them forged papers. Some saved many lives, whilst others paid for their courage with their own. Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, honors these brave people as "The Righteous among the Nations." And a few new names are still being added every year. Nevertheless, their stories are still largely unknown.
Three exemplary stories from Poland, the Netherlands and Germany examine the different motives of these "righteous" gentiles. The documentary follows director Andrea Morgenthaler as she goes to Jerusalem and New York to find out more. In addition to people who were there at the time, the former and current heads of the Department of Righteous" tell their stories about the "Righteous Among the Nations."
