The Dictators' Children
July 11, 2016How do parents leave their mark on their children? How do you deal with your own personal legacy? What is it like to grow up as the son or daughter of a dictator or war criminal? When does it begin to sink in that your father or uncle is, or was, a cruel and ruthless despot? How do you bear the stigma? How do you rise to the challenge and accept personal responsibility?
Alina Fernández saw her father Fidel Castro as an intelligent narcissist and rebelled against him, ultimately fleeing from Cuba for good. Jaffar Amin is seeking reconciliation with the victims of his father Idi Amin. Bettina Goering, grandniece of the Nazi war criminal Hermann Goering, knows she can only survive if she forgives the unforgivable. Yet Lucía Pinochet sees a caring person behind her father’s brutality. This two-part documentary gives an intimate insight into the lives of the children of dictators.
