June 7, 2011Advertisement
Project goal: Transforming the energy supply in Cape Verde
Climate goal: By 2013, the country will draw 30 percent of its supply from renewable energy; by 2050 that is set to grow to 50 percent
Capacity: Around 35 megawatts generated by solar and wind power
Project investment: 100 million euros
Carbon savings: A total of 60,000 tons by 2020
The sun shines on the island country of Cape Verde all year round and a warm wind blows most of the time. At present, the country draws 10 percent of its energy supply from the sun and wind and by 2020, the figure will have doubled – with fossil fuels largely consigned to history. The government is the first in West Africa to pass a renewable energy law.
