Shooting at US Planned Parenthood clinic

Five police officers and six civilians were injured on Friday amid a shooting incident at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado. No fatalities were reported.

"The perpetrator is in custody. The situation has been resolved," Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers said. "There's no continuing peril to the citizens of Colorado Springs but there's a huge crime scene that has to be processed."

Police in Colorado Springs said it would likely take days to investigate what happened at the Planned Parenthood facility. Officials would not comment on the alleged gunman's motive, saying only that police responded with "valor."

News footage showed teams of police in an armored vehicle at the snowy scene in Colorado Springs. The FBI and agents from the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were assisting local law enforcement investigators.

Ambulances and police vehicles were seen near the location where the incident was reportedly taking place.At least one of the wounded had been taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Planned Parenthood is a family planning center that offers health care, including abortions, in some of its clinics, something that has made it controversial among many conservatives in the United States.

Several anti-abortion protests had been held outside the facility in Colorado Springs in recent years, most recently in August, according to the daily "Colorado Springs Gazette."

"We don't yet know the full circumstances and motives behind this criminal action," Vicki Cowart, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains, said in a statement."We share the concerns of many Americans that extremists are creating a poisonous environment that feeds domestic terrorism in this country. We will never back away from providing care in a safe, supportive environment that millions of people rely on and trust."
