Suarez downs England, Colombia victorious - World Cup Day 8 in pictures.
A Luis Suarez brace downs England, Colombia continue winning form against Ivory Coast and Japan look to rebound against Greece - all the best pictures from World Cup Day 8.
England on the brink of elimination
Liverpool's Luis Suarez was the Premier League's leading scorer this past season, so it should come as no surprise to English fans that he was capable of two goals in a game that likely spelled the end for the Three Lions at the World Cup.
Suarez back from injury
Uruguay's coach Oscar Tabarez started Luis Suarez, who remained on the bench for the team's opening group match against Costa Rica due to injury. In the 39th minute, Suarez expertly headed in a cross from Edinson Cavani's perfectly placed cross to put Uruguay ahead 1-0.
Rooney scores first World Cup goal
Uruguay looked to have England's number for the entire match, and the few opportunities that fell to Wayne Rooney just couldn't find their way into the goal. That changed in the 75th minute on a point-blank goal by Rooney that gave England hope for a point in the match. It was his first-ever World Cup goal.
Hopes dashed
England's hope was short-lived, however. Five minutes before the end of regular time, it was Suarez again with his second goal that drove the final nail in the Three Lion's coffin. If Italy and Costa Rica draw in Thursday's final match, England is out of the World Cup. Even if one team loses, England's chances are very slim.
Winners meet in Brasilia
Ivory Coast took on Colombia in the day's opening World Cup action. It was a showdown of winners in Brasilia - both teams won their first match of the tournament.
100 for the captain
Colombia captain Mario Yepes is playing in his first World Cup at age 38 - something most thought he'd never be able to do after his country missed out on qualifying for South Africa four years ago. Against Ivory Coast, he earned his 100th cap.
Unexpected interference
English referee Howard Webb briefly stopped play when an oversized ball found its way onto the pitch. Colombia striker Teofila Gutierrez could've used the bigger football when he fluffed the Colombians' best chance of the first half in front of a near-empty net.
Rapid fire Colombians
Colombia scored two goals in six minutes in the second half to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Youngsters James Rodriguez (pictured) and Juan Ferando Quintero were the scorers - a promising sign for an improving Colombian national team setup.
Not enough from Ivory Coast
Gervinho's impressive run from the left wing led to his 74th minute goal for the Ivory Coast moments later, but it wasn't enough to earn a result. The match finished 2-1, putting Colombia atop Group C with six points.
Japan take on Greece
The day's final World Cup match saw another encounter of teams looking for their first victory. A creative Japan side took on the always-defensive Greece.
Cards and injuries
Kostas Katsouranis was sent off in the first half after picking up a second yellow. It was a harsh booking, which combined with the injury to Kostas Mitroglu made the first half even more bitter for Greece.
Missed chances
Japan didn't struggle to create opportunities with their extra man, but they certainly struggled to convert them. Be free kicks or in front of an empty net, Japan's finishing let them down against Greece, and it ended in a scoreless draw.
