Space Cake Sends Mom on Accidental Trip
July 26, 2006The local court in the western city of Düsseldorf was busy with cake on Tuesday. This was no office party, but a case involving a cake with a special secret ingredient, which is causing its Heidelberg-based baker a bit of trouble.
The amateur baker sent her creation through the mail to a 30-year-old man in Düsseldorf who lives with his mom. Since the intended recipient was not at home at the time, nosy mom opened the package herself.
Apparently delighted at the edible contents she found and having a bit of an appetite at the time, she decided to partake. In fact, she ate half of the thing. It proved the beginning of a long, strange trip for the 60-year-old.
The cake was chock full of marijuana, which sent the unsuspecting and somewhat greedy mom flying, and she did not enjoy the ride. She told the court she experienced "cramps, delusions and psychosis" while she was stoned out of her mind. Her son, more the reticent type, simply said the situation was "screwed up."
The judge seemed to take it all in stride, telling the mother, who had sobered up by this time, that it wasn't all that bad. But at the same time, she fined the woman who baked the cake 3,000 euros ($3,800) on charges of negligent bodily harm.
