Downhill gold for Austria
Austria's Matthias Mayer struck gold in the men's downhill on the treacherous Rosa Khutor run on Sunday, as pre-race favorites Bode Miller of the US and Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal failed to make it to the podium. Christof Innerhofer of Italy and Norway's Kjetil Jansrud took the silver and bronze medals.

Lucky escape
Sarka Pancochova of the Czech Republic lost control on the first jump of her second run, hitting her head hard as she fell. Her helmet was left with a long crack, but she got back up and completed the slopestyle course under her own steam.
Cologna unbeatable
Swiss cross-country skier Dario Cologna finished strong to win the men's skiathlon, in which the athletes race for 15 kilometers in the classical style, before completing the final 15 in freestyle. Marcus Hellner of Sweden won silver, ahead of Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway, who took bronze.
Claudia Pechstein falls short
Claudia Pechstein, who was forced to sit out the Vancouver Games due to a controversial doping ban, had hoped to pick up Germany's first medal in Sochi. She came up short in Sunday's women's 3,000 meters race. Dutch speedskater Ireen Wust took the gold medal.
Loch delivers gold
Germany had to wait until late in Sunday's action for its first medal of these Olympics. Felix Loch defended the Olympic title he took in Vancouver four years ago, winning gold in the luge, ahead of Russia's Albert Demchenko and Armin Zoeggeler of Italy
