Seeking success in Barcelona
Germany's athletes were seeking to impress after their disappointing performance at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.
Free fall success
Anna Bader won bronze in the inaugural high diving competition, jumping 20 meters from a platform into Barcelona’s harbor. Divers hit the water at a speed of around 90 kilometers per hour, while several scuba divers, two jet skis and one boat were on hand nearby in the water to ensure a swift reaction to any possible accident.
Sole face saver in the pool
Marko Koch (left) won second place in the 200 meter breast stroke event. The sole German medal in a pool event at the Barcelona championships. Gold went to Daniel Gyurta of Hungary (center) and bronze to Matti Mattsson of Finland (right).
Making a dive
Sascha Klein executes his jump during the men's 10m platform diving final. His efforts brought Germany home a bronze, the event's third-most-precious medal.
The Lurz stroke
Germany's Thomas Lurz rehydrates en route his first ever 25km marathon open water gold, making him the first male swimmer to have won the top medal in every open water event.
Head above water
Angela Maurer of Germany battled the whitewash during the women's open water racex off the coast of Barcelona. She was to finish with the bronze medal for 10 and silver for 25 kilometers.
Peace and poise
Germany's Kyra Felssner shows grace in the synchronised swimming technical solo final, but was unable to finish higher than 16th and last in the final stage.
Taking aim
Germany water polo team member Paul Schüler prepares to pass during training. Germany won their opening group match, 9-8 over Kazakhstan, with Schüler scoring once and providing an assist.
Perfect symmetry
German duo Patrick Hausding (L) and Sascha Klein won gold - their nation's first in Barcelona - in the men's 10m synchro platform diving final.
That winning feeling
Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia cannot hide his delight after winning the men's 5km open water race. Germany's Thomas Lurz took bronze, adding to his silver in the 10km open water event.
