Queen axes party

British Queen Elizabeth II has cancelled the yearly Christmas party for royal staff, citing economic concerns.
The Queen wants to "show restraint" at a time of economic austerity, Buckingham Palace said Thursday.
About 600 staff of the Royal Household generally attend the biannual event, where they are given a rare opportunity to mingle with members of the royal family.
The Sun newspaper reports that the event usually costs around 57,000 euros ($80,000).
"The Queen is acutely aware of the difficult economic circumstances facing the country. It was decided it was appropriate for the Royal Household to show restraint and not hold the party this year," said a spokesman.
The government is expected to announce cuts to government department funding on October 20th, in a bid to rein in Britain's record deficit.
