Peace Prize for German and American

German actress Hanne Hiob, daughter of the late playwright Bertolt Brecht, and the Jesuit anti-militarist campaigner Roy Bourgeois have both received Germany's Aachen peace prize. Hanne Hiob, 82, whose father was a noted anti-Fascist writer, has appeared in plays all over Europe and is the first winner of the prize from the world of the arts. She said she was surprised "there is someone left who wants to reward my political activity." She has spent 30 years fighting the extreme right and campaigning for peace. For the last 20 years Roy Bourgeois, 67, has been organizing protests against what he considers to be the systematic teaching of torture in the United States, particularly at the US military base in Fort Benning, Georgia, where military personnel from Latin American countries are trained in paramilitary techniques. A former military officer who served in Vietnam, Bourgeois was ordained a priest and spent four years in jail for his anti-war activities. The prize, worth 2000 euros ($2,600), is named after the border city of Aachen, and has been awarded annually since 1988 to "people who have made a contribution to mutual understanding among individuals and people."
