April 13, 2015

Paris' city council has approved a resolution that was in favor of bidding for the Olympic Games. But the move still has to be ratified by the French Olympic Committee before the bid is official.

Paris looks set to go head-to-head with Hamburg in the competition to host the 2024 Olympic Games after the city council voted in favor of supporting a bid.

Now, the French Olympic Committee has until September 15 to formally declare its candidacy. It will compete with the northern German city, as well as Rome and Boston for the hosting rights.

Paris's credentials have already been bolstered by political support from French president Francois Hollande and Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

Paris lost bids to host the Games in 1992, 2008 and 2012 and last hosted the Summer Olympics in 1924. Istanbul, Doha and Baku are other potential candidates to compete for the Games.

In March, Hamburg was put forward by the German Olympic Committee as the country's sole representative in the Olympic bidding process.

The city out-muscled the country's capital Berlin in a head-to-head duel with Germany aiming to secure host status for the first time since the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

The host city for the 2024 Olympic Games will be announced in the summer of 2017.
