At least 16 people were killed and dozens wounded in an explosion in the main market in the city of Vladikavkaz in the Russian republic of North Ossetia. Russian news agencies reported that the blast came from a car.

An explosion rocked the central market in Vladikavkaz, the capital of the Russian republic of North Ossetia on Thursday.

Russian news agencies quoted a local interior ministry source as saying that about 100 people were wounded. At least 16 people were reported to have died.

The blast appeared to have come from a car that blew up at the entrance to the market. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the driver of the car was a suicide bomber.

North Ossetia lies in Russia's North Caucasus region, to the north of the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia. Russia and Georgia went to war over the area in August 2008 and tensions in the region remain high.

Russian investigators opened a probe into what they described as "an act of terror." Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered an envoy to fly to Vladikavkaz immediately.
