Morocco launches bid to host 2026 World Cup
August 11, 2017Morocco's football association (RMFF) announced in a statement posted on its website that it had met this Friday's deadline to submit its application to host the 2026 World Cup to the sport's global governing body, FIFA. This is the fifth time that Morocco is seeking to host the World Cup, after its bids came up short for the 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010 editions of the tournament.
Morocco's chances of success are also regarded as being slim this time, due to a joint bid submitted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The decision as to which country will host an expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup will be made at next year's FIFA Congress in Moscow.
Bids could only come from Africa, South America or Oceania as Europe and Asia were ruled out because Russia and Qatar are hosting the 2018 and 2022 World Cupsrespectively.
