Schumacher crash
June 7, 2015Mick Schumacher has suffered a fractured hand in a crash on Sunday in the junior ADAC Formula Four series.
The 16-year old son of record Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher has an "uncomplicated fracture" of his right hand following the collision at Spielberg, ADAC said. Schumacher, racing for Van Amersfoort Racing, hit the pit wall after being struck from behind by Austrian Thomas Freining on the home straight.
"I hit him while dodging him," the teenager told German sports agency SID. Schumacher appeared unhurt as he quickly climbed out of his car without assistance, before showing a thumbs-up. "I'm okay and will attack again tomorrow. It's a shame my race had to end so early."
"I took with me more momentum to the car in front and I wanted to walk past, but he also drew inward, so I moved to the left in order to get past," described Schumacher. "He broke unexpectedly early, and I met him while trying to dodge him."
Schumacher won the third race of the season in Oschersleben six weeks ago. His father is still recovering from serious head injuries suffered during a skiing accident in December 2013.
