Maldives - Rain Forests of the Seas

Coral reefs are among the most diverse, species-rich habitats on the planet. In some places in the Maldives, the colorful underwater world has turned a chalky white - the bleached corals have died. Without coral reefs, the Maldives will founder.

The reefs serve as a natural breakwater, preventing flooding and luring tourists to the country. But tourism is part of the problem. More and more trash is landing in the ocean and over-fishing is increasing. Now hotels and fishermen are being asked to assume responsibility for the reefs’ survival.
