Mainz take Dortmund down a peg

Jefferson ChaseSeptember 20, 2014

In Saturday afternoon's late kick-off, Mainz beat BVB 2-0 in a game where Dortmund's composure in front of goal once again proved a problem. Shinji Okazaki and a Matthias Ginter own goal decided the game.

During the week, Borussia Dortmund looked like returning to the title-winning form of seasons past. But they ran into a determined opponent in Mainz, and a bit of bad luck broke the backs of the men in yellow and black.

How much would Dortmund have left in their tank after Tuesday's convincing win over Arsenal in the Champions League? Not all that much seemed to be the answer as Germany's second best team, who started without Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ciro Immobile, struggled to generate pressure against hosts Mainz.

Adrian Ramos had a pair of first-half chances, neither of which he was able to convert. Mainz also went close just before the break, but the opportunity was born more of accident than design.

Dortmund upped the intensity in the second half, and a goal looked to be but a matter of time, when Jürgen Klopp's men were given the equivalent of the ice-bucket challenge´from their hosts. No one closed down substitute Jairo, and his low cross found Shinji Okazaki who converted from point blank range.

Immobile misses, Mainz score again

Dortmund had a chance to restore order four minutes later when Okazaki handled the ball in the Mainz area. But Tuesday's hero Immobile only got off a weak spot kick that was no match for Mainz keeper Loris Karius, who saved low to his right.

Mainz's lead was doubled in 16 minutes from time. Matthias Ginter just got a foot to another Jairo cross, but was only able to divert it past Roman Weidenfeller for an own goal. Shocked and showing signs of tiredness, Dortmund had to accept a 2-0 defeat.

Mainz temporarily moved to second in the table while Dortmund sank to eighth.

Earlier Saturday afternoon action in the Bundesliga saw a number of exciting results, including a victory that sent Paderborn top of the table.
