Jakarta — the sinking capital

Sp: Wright, Loveday/A: Michael WetzelJanuary 17, 2019

In Indonesia, the capital city Jakarta is sinking about 25 centimeters each year. That's not only due to rising sea levels but mainly because of water overexploitation. People who don't have access to public drinking water are taking water from underground aquifers. As a result, the ground is giving way and the country is sinking into the sea.
