Kerber fails to advance to semis in Singapore
October 30, 2015After No. 2-ranked Garbine Muguruza of Spain beat the Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova (No.4) 6:4, 4:6, 7:5, Kerber (7) had gone into her final round robin match on Friday with every chance of advancing to the semis, needing to take just one set from Lucie Safarova(9).
However, the 27-year-old German was too passive in the match, allowing Safarova to repeatedly score points on the forehand, and win the match in straight sets,4:6, 3:6. She thus blew the opportunity to become the first German since Steffi Graf (1998) to reach the semifinals in Singapore.
In Saturday's semifinals, Muguruza is to face Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland (5), while Russia's Maria Sharapova (3) takes on Kvitova.
Kerber, meanwhile, can look back on four tournament wins this season; in Charleston, Stuttgart, Birmingham and Stanford.
