When Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called early presidential and general elections for the end of June it appeared to wrong-foot the opposition. Most predicted an easy victory for Erdogan’s ruling AK Party. But Turkey’s fragmented opposition has seized the moment, achieving a rare unity and selecting strong candidates.
