How will Brexit change the life of Britons? Photographers have been glimpsing into the future — in subtle, eloquent photos.
"Many Britons are fully aware what withdrawing from the EU means," is how photographer Linus Muellerschoen describes the zeitgeist in Great Britain. He and seven other photographers from the Ostkreuz School of Photography in Berlin's Weissensee district spent a week in the country that will most likely not be in the European Union for much longer. A short span, but time enough to take the pulse of the nation. Muellerschoen is one of eight graduates from the renowned Ostkreuzschule to have occupied themselves with the subject of Brexit on their trip.
Titled "Distant Islands," a collection of their photos is on display in Berlin's Willy Brandt House until May 12, 2019. These are not photos depicting current political disputes but studies that probe and provoke, dealing in feelings.
"It's a mix of documentary and artistic photography," says Bastian Thiery, who was also there with the other Ostkreuz photographers. "Distant Islands" gives a somewhat different view of Brexit, clearly revealing that Great Britain's future is completely unresolved.
