Highlights from the 2016 Golden Globes
The Hollywood awards season got off to a raucous start Sunday with the Golden Globes in Los Angeles, as "The Revenant" and "The Martian" took home the top film prizes. Lady Gaga and Sylvester Stallone were also honored.
And the Golden Globe goes to...
The Golden Globes, seen as Hollywood's biggest party of the year, marks the official start of the awards season. Recognition at the Globes is usually a good indicator of future success at the Academy Awards, which will take place on February 28, 2016.
Taking aim at Hollywood
Beer in hand, host Ricky Gervais got the show off to a promising start with a series of jokes that skewered awards broadcaster NBC, Caitlyn Jenner, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and - in a bit that clearly made the cut at the very last minute - actor Sean Penn.
Winslet wins first award
An "extremely surprised and overwhelmed" Kate Winslet took home the first award of the night, as best supporting actress for the film "Steve Jobs." "These categories are so crowded and crammed with incredible skill and integrity, and I feel prouder than ever this year to be included," she said as she accepted the award.
A win...but not for 'Star Wars'
Actor Oscar Isaac, currently starring in the box office smash "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," took home the Globe for his TV miniseries "Show Me a Hero." "Star Wars" premiered on December 17 after the nominations were announced.
'Inside Out'
Pixar film "Inside Out" took home the award for best animated film of 2015, beating out, among others, fellow Pixar nominee "The Good Dinosaur."
Last chance win
Actor Jon Hamm took home the Globe for the critically acclaimed TV series "Mad Men," which ended after seven seasons last year. He first won the award in 2008.
'Thank you to my imaginary friend'
Hollywood veteran Sylvester Stallone, seen here with his daughters, won the first major acting award of his career for "Creed." Stallone, who played a character he first embodied in the 1976 movie "Rocky," thanked Rocky Balboa,"the best imaginary friend I ever had."
'Music worked out first'
Grammy-winning singer Lady Gaga also took home her first acting award, winning for her performance in the TV series "American Horror Story: Hotel." "I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer, but music worked out first," she said, clearly moved. "This is one of the greatest moments in my life."
Best comedic actor? Matt Damon
Matt Damon won the award for best actor in a musical or comedy for his standout role in the not-terribly-comedic "The Martian." Damon carries most of the film, starring as an astronaut marooned on Mars.
'Do you need your glasses?'
Denzel Washington was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, and got his family on stage to accept it. While it was moving to see the actor awarded for his body of work, you'd think he would have prepared a more eloquent acceptance speech ahead of time. Or at least remembered to bring his glasses. His wife reminded him twice that he needed them.
Threepeat
Jennifer Lawrence picked up her third Globe for her performance as the woman who invented the Miracle Mop in "Joy," managing to make it up to the stage without tripping (for a change).
