Highlights from the 2013-14 German Cup
Big-name clubs and ambitious minnows do battle in the 2013-14 German Cup.
A palpable relief
Borussia Dortmund's Kevin Grosskreutz (M) is swamped by teammates after his 71st -minute goal, putting his side on its way to a 3-0 win over Wilhelmshaven. Dortmund had to battle hard to overcome the minnows, who made life tough for the Super Cup winners.
Eyes on the prize
Wilhelmshaven's Angelos Elefteriadis and Dortmund's Mats Hummels battle for possession during their first-round tie. Both defenders played full games.
Leaving it late
Hendrick Zück and Mike Hanke celebrate after Freiburg's 2-0 victory over Neustrelitz. The Bundesliga club took until the second half of extra-time to break the deadlock.
Blazing Son makes impression
Bayer Leverkusen summer signing Heung-Min Son battles Lippstadt's Fabian Lübbers in the Bundesliga team's 6-1 win. Son scored on his debut after coming on as a substitute, having joined Leverkusen from Hamburg for a sum believed to be around 10 million euros.
Bend it like Bender
Bayer Leverkusen's Lars Bender is swamped by teammates Stefan Reinartz (L), Stefan Kiessling (M) and Simon Rolfes (R) after opening the scoring for his side against Lippstadt.
Fine nine for Hoffenheim
Hoffenheim's Kai Herdling (R) takes a spill up against Daniel Rosenfeldt of Aumund-Vegesack, but it was the former who had plenty to smile about in a 9-0 thumping. Herdling got on the scoresheet, scoring twice in two minutes, with all Hoffenheim's goals coming in the second half.
Mainz men ease through
Joo-Ho Park (R) of Mainz battles for the ball with Ozan Yilmaz (L) of Fortuna Cologne during their first-round tie. Mainz eased past their lower-league opponents 2-1.
Winners seeing red
Mainz were helped on by some healthy support from their traveling fans at Fortuna Cologne's South Stadium.
Braunschweig first to fall
Eintracht Braunschweig became the first Bundesliga club eliminated from the German Cup following their 2-1 defeat to Armenia Bielefeld. Even the introduction of the club's marquee summer signing Simeon Jackson wasn't enough to turn the tides. Sebasian Hille (pictured above) got the first goal for Bielefeld.
An embarassing defeat
Werder Bremen were dumped out of the cup by Saarbrücken on Sunday. Tim Stegerer and Marcel Ziemer both struck in extra time to give the third-tier club a 3-1 win over their Bundesliga competitors, capping what was a shaky outing for goalkeeper Sebastian Mielitz.
Sandhausen knock off Nuremberg
Sandhausen should have been playing third-tier football this season, but MSV Duisburg's bad finances meant they were relegated instead. It didn't take long for Sandhausen to make the most of their second chance as they eliminated Bundesliga side Nuremberg on penalties.
Fiery fans
The match between Sandhausen and Nuremberg also featured a moment of pyrotechnics from the home side's most ardent supporters. For a moment the flames stopped play, but the game resumed shortly thereafter.
Gladbach eliminated
Marco Sailer's third-division Darmstadt knocked out Granit Xhaka's Mönchengladbach on penalties following a 0-0 draw. Hannover, Hertha Berlin, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Eintracht Frankfurt each advanced.
