Western leaders are offering support to Afghan president Hamid Karzai after he was declared the winner of an election marred by fraud and corruption. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, U-N Secreatary General Ban Ki-moon and Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle were among those offering their public support for Karzai. Their backing comes after the country's Election Commission cancelled an upcoming presidential run-off and declared Karzai the winner.
