Hamburg's planned Olympic venues in pictures
The heart of Hamburg's Olympic plan is a set of sports venues in the middle of the Elbe River. DW has a closer look at some of the possible locations, should Hamburg get the Games.
Will this be Hamburg's new center?
This is what the center of Hamburg could look like, come 2024. Planners envisage that Elbe Island of "Kleiner Grasbrook" will be able to fit in the Olympic Stadium, the tournament park, the athletes' village and two new Olympic halls. To do that, various harbor installations would need to be removed.
Running through the city
The current city center is also part of Hamburg's plan. The triathlon, marathon and walking events could all take place here, as could the...
Over the bridge
... the city cycle race. For nearly 20 years Hamburg has been the host of one of Germany's most significant bike race, the Cyclassics. The Köhlbrand Bridge over the harbour is one of the highlights of the race course.
Water, water everywhere
Hamburg is a city built on water and this area will also be used should Hamburg host the Games. There are many rowing and canoe areas, just like here on the Alster lake.
The open seas
Hamburg also has sports locations close to the open sea. Whether Travemünde, Kiel or Lübeck, the sailing event locations are just around the corner.
Not HSV, but Olympic football
Nearly 60,000 fans fit into Hamburg's Bundesliga Stadium. Part of the Olympic football tournament would take place here, if Hamburg was awarded the 2024 Games.
An equestrian tradition
Since 1920 the German Showjumping event has been held in Klein-Flottbeck in Hamburg. The site, which is steeped in history, would host the dressage and jumping events.
Olympic tennis on clay
The Hamburg Rothenbaum tournament is one of the oldest of its type in the world, but it has lost a lot of its shine. The Olympics could help give the location a little bit of life back.
Sport in an exhibition center
Hamburg's exhibition center could serve as a flexible location for a host of sports. Among the planned events are: judo, wrestling, boxing, badminton, table tennis and volleyball.
