Grammy Awards 2020: the top nominations
Lizzo, Billy Eilish and Lil Nas X are at the top of the list — and are predicted to win the awards in the major categories too. Ahead of the Grammys on Sunday, who are the other musicians who scored the most nods?
Lizzo
Norm-breaking, authentic and charismatic, Lizzo has been promoting body positivity long before it became a mainstream trend — and in 2019 the world finally noticed. Named entertainer of the year 2019 by Time magazine, the singer-rapper is also the artist with the most Grammy nominations this year. Her eight nods include best record, best album, best new artist and song of the year.
Billie Eilish
2019 was also the year of Billie Eilish's spectacular breakthrough with her haunting debut album, "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" She's been collecting numerous accolades and platinum singles, and now the 18-year-old has also become the youngest artist to ever be nominated in the four top Grammy categories in the same year. She has six nominations altogether.
Lil Nas X
In times of political division, Lil Nas X's country rap song "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, was the inescapable hit everyone wanted to hear. The rapper became the first openly LGBTQ artist to win a Country Music Association award; now he's also among the singers with the most Grammy nominations. He scored six nods, including record of the year, album of the year and best new artist.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande is the woman with the most Instagram followers, and the popularity of "Thank U, Next" could definitely be felt online when it was released at the end of 2018, with countless memes playing on its lyrics. Now she's honored with five Grammy nominations. Grande already won her first Grammy Award last year with her fourth studio album, "Sweetener."
H.E.R.
Under the stage name H.E.R. — which stands for Having Everything Revealed — the enigmatic R&B artist Gabriella Wilson has also scored five nods this year with her album "I Used to Know Her" and the single "Hard Place." She had already won two Grammys in 2019, for best R&B performance and best R&B album.
Bon Iver
Indie folk band Bon Iver has been nominated in two of the top categories — record of the year and album of the year — but with Lizzo and Billie Eilish dominating the field this year, it's unlikely that singer Justin Vernon will be called to the stage for any of those awards on Sunday. Bon Iver however has a third option, with a nod for best alternative music album.
Vampire Weekend
Just like Bon Iver, the indie rock band has earned three nods, including for album of the year and best alternative music album. But here too, Vampire Weekend's critically-acclaimed album "Father of the Bride" most certainly won't steal a win from Lizzo or Billy Eilish.
Taylor Swift
Swift has been known to make history on several occasions — the singer-songwriter has six Guinness world records — but she won't be among the top winners in 2020. The 10-time Grammy Award winner obtained three nominations; "Lover" is not among the album of the year nominees, but it's at least on the list for best pop vocal album.
