Germany, Iraq and the United Nations

As part of its role in the international community, Gemany this year joins the Security Council of the United Nations. It will also play an important role in the decision over whether to take military action against Iraq and the government of dictator Saddam Hussein. So far, the German government has said it would not participate in a military attack against Iraq, even under a U.N. mandate -- a position that has placed it on a collision course with Washington.
