World Cup hosts Germany suffered a morale-sapping 2-1 defeat to Turkey in a friendly international in Istanbul on Saturday, but coach Jürgen Klinsmann refused to press the panic button.

Halil Altintop gave the home side a 25th-minute lead with Nuri Sahin grabbing a second one minute from the end.

Oliver Neuville replied for Germany in the fourth minute of injury time.

"I was disappointed in particular by our performance in the first half," Klinsmann said. "We could have led at the break. I was angry but we found a better rhythm in the second half.

"We have aways said that the team is in a building process which will finish at the World Cup and we remain convinced that we can do great things as we showed at the Confederations Cup (where they were third)," he added.

Germany went into the match without midfield inspiration Michael Ballack and Werder Bremen striker Miroslav Klose, who were both suffering from flu.

Cologne's Lukas Podolski impressed and was responsible for Germany's best chance in the first half.

Ballack meanwhile has also been ruled out of his team's friendly international against China in Hamburg on Wednesday after failing to recover from flu.

However, a team spokesman said that Klose should be fit to return to the starting line-up.

Klose is the top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with seven goals.
