Rolling under the Influence
May 22, 2007It seems the 31-year old had been out partying with mates and was on his way to another village a couple of kilometers down the road in the northern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The disabled man caught the attention of passing police officers because he was weaving his wheelchair down the middle of the street. The stench of alcohol on his breath was enough for police to order him to blow into the bag -- where a blood alcohol content was registered that was ten times higher than the legal driving limit.
Although Germans are in the top-ten in the world rankings for knocking back booze, police were rightly concerned about the man's health -- 0.50 percent is generally considered enough to kill a normal person.
Polite police
The officers called an ambulance, but the drunk driver went a bit berserk at the idea of going to the hospital, saying he was fine. And quite rightly so. The idea of waking up to hospital food after a big night out drinking enough to put anyone off.
The eventual solution -- the police officers drove alongside the man all the way to his front door to make sure he didn't drive into a ditch. But it seems the disabled man wasn't happy with the courteous police service. He had wanted to keep partying and wasn't planning on going home at all.
Police said that because the man was technically traveling as a pedestrian, he could not be charged with a driving offence.
"It's not like we can impound his wheelchair," the spokesman said. "But he is facing some sort of punishment. It's just not clear yet what exactly that will be."
