These days, many travelers rely on information from their smart phones rather than on traditional travel guides.

The tourism board in the German state of Thuringia is keeping up with the trend. On Tuesday, it launched an app dedicated to the Protestant reformer Martin Luther.

"Luther to go" has been released in advance of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, which takes place in 2017.

The app covers an area of 1000 kilometers and features information about some 20 so-called "Luther towns", 180 churches, as well as 400 other tourist destinations.

The state is hoping its association with the great reformer will attract a significant number of visitors. Last year, Thuringia welcomed 3.7 million tourists. Eisenach, Weimar, Erfurt and Jena are the most popular destinations in the state.
