The attack happened on Friday as the two men - both contractors for the construction firm and working in Nigeria - were driving in separate cars without security escorts.

Police and the construction company confirmed the incident.

"About four armed men emerged from the bush near Sagamu (in Ogun state) on Friday morning and attacked," police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi told AFP. "A bullet hit one German and he was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital, while the hoodlums abducted another German."

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is currently in Nigeria to meet with government officials and representatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Among other things, they will discuss the threat from the Islamist militant group Boko Haram in Nigeria.

No one has claimed responsibility for Friday's shooting.
