German Cup round-up: Dresden beat RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig became the first top-flight team to be eliminated from the German Cup this term, losing in the first round to storied east German side Dynamo Dresden of the second division. The recently promoted Bundesliga club succumbed to a 5-4 defeat on penalties after the score was locked at 2-2 after extra time.

Leipzig, funded by Red Bull and a controversial addition to the Bundesliga, were 2-0 up at half time at the Stadion Dresden and appeared to be cruising towards a routine win. But Stefan Kutschke's penalty early in the second half brough the home team back into the contest, with the forward adding a second 12 minutes from time.

After 30 minutes of extra time, the game went to a shootout and Dresden - promoted from the third tier last season - prevailed after Leipzig midfielder Dominik Kaiser missed his spot-kick. Aias Aosman kept his head to convert his penalty, securing a famous win in the all-east German showdown.

Debutants shine

Schalke's newest recruit, Breel Embolo, was also on target as the Royal Blues eased to a convincing 4-1 win at Villingen, in what was generally another successful day for Bundesliga sides.

Cologne crushed BFC Preussen with a ruthless second half display, scoring five goals in 20 second-half minutes as they won 7-0. Konstantin Rausch had a goal and an assist in his first game with the Billy Goats.

In the late game, Wolfsburg held on for a 2-1 win at FSV Frankfurt. The Bundesliga side raced into a 2-0 lead inside 16 minutes, with a Steffan Schaffer own goal and Bas Dost strike giving Wolfsburg a commanding lead.

Fabian Schleusener halved Wolfsburg's advantage early in the second half, but third tier Frankfurt were unable to level and Wolfsburg went through.

Freiburg midfielder Vincenzo Grifo scored the first and third goals as the promoted Bundesliga outfit eased to a 4-0 win at Babelsberg.

Other standout results included a 1-0 win for an under-strength Borussia Mönchengladbach at Drochtersen/Assel, which was Gladbach's second game in a week following their Champions League play-off first-leg at Young Boys Bern.

Arminia Bielefeld overcame the 10 men of Essen on penalties, Fortuna Düsseldorf eased to a 3-0 win at Hansa Rostock, and 1860 Munich scored a last-minute winner to beat Karlsruhe.
