Champions League draw

Bayer Leverkusen have been pitted against Paris Saint-German, and Schalke have perhaps the toughest test of all four German clubs in their date with Real Madrid.

The draw, held at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Monday, also paired Manchester City of England with Spanish heavyweights Barcelona of Spain and Greek outfit Olympiacos with English champions Manchester United

AC Milan (Italy) meet Atletico Madrid (Spain) and Galatasaray (Turkey) take on Chelsea (England).

Bayern and Dortmund, as winners of their respective groups, play the second legs of their ties at home, while Schalke and Leverkusen will play hosts in the first leg.

The ties will get underway on February 18 and 19, with the second legs to be played the following week.

Bayern will meet Arsenal in the final 16 for the second-straight year. The Bundesliga leaders eliminated the English Premier League club, for which Germany national team duo Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil both play, via away goals last season.

"It's a prestigious tie but a tough opponent. It was the hardest draw amongst the second-placed teams. Arsenal are certainly not a team you'd hope to face," Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said after the draw.

Dortmund went from facing elimination to winning Group F courtesy of Kevin Grosskreutz's unlikely late goal on the final matchday, and have perhaps one of the easiest match-ups, against Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg.

Schalke's prospects are far less healthy. Real Madrid, featuring Ballon d'Or favorite Cristiano Ronaldo, lie third on the La Liga table but made light work of progressing to the Champions League's knockout stages. And despite scraping into the lucrative Round of 16, Schalke head coach Jens Keller is no guarantee to be on the touchline come April's tie.

The Spanish club, however, stressed how tough the tie would be: "It is true that in theory there were stronger rivals, but that is only in theory," Madrid director Emilio Butragueno said. "We know that we have always found it tough against German teams, it has been very difficult for us to win in Germany."

Leverkusen have a tough ask against French champions Paris Saint-Germain, whose seemingly bottomless reserves of cash have delivered the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Edinson Cavani in recent seasons.

In the Europa League draw, held after that of the Champions League, Eintracht Frankfurt was drawn with Portuguese title holders Porto. Should they get past the two-time Europa League champions in February, Frankfurt will then face the winner of Swansea City of England and Italian club Napoli.
