German chancellor Angela Merkel is facing a first major crisis just a month into her second term in power. With the opposition piling on the pressure, Merkel had to reshuffle her cabinet on Friday, after a senior minister stepped down. Labour minister Franz Josef Jung resigned after allegations he withheld details of civilian casulties after an air strike in Afghanistan. The air strike was called in by a German officer in early September when Jung was still defence minister.
