General Motors says it will cut some 9-thousand jobs around Europe as it restructures its Opel unit

SHANE - The axe is falling for thousands of Opel workers around Europe -- including many here in Germany. ARIANE - That's right Shane. Nick Reilly, acting chief of GMs European operations, says the firm needs to cut some 9000 jobs around the continent -- with more than half of those losses coming in Germany. Reilly said the sweeping restructuring programme is necessary to make Opel viable in an increasingly competitive market.
