Central Asia has been in the spotlight lately, particularly because of German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier's visit to the region in early November. Steinmeier has made appeals for greater EU involvement in Central Asia -- which includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan -- where political corruption and human rights violations are major concerns over a decade after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
