The Missouri Department of Public Safety said on Saturday that an officer was shot on Saturday, but that his injuries were not life-threatening.

"A search is under way for the suspect in the shooting of the officer," it said, adding the incident took place at a community center slightly removed from the main protest areas of recent months.

Missouri broadcaster KSDK reported that the officer was shot in the arm.

The circumstances behind the incident were not immediately clear.

The St Louis suburb of Ferguson was the site of days of racially-charged protests after black teenager Michael Brown was shot dead by a police offier on August 9. The police response to these protests was also criticized in some quarters as heavy- handed.

On Thursday, Ferguson police chief Tom Jackson had issued a video apology to Brown's parents after weeks of critiscism.
