The skyline of the city's Media Harbor, a docklands area rebuilt in the 1990s, is Dusseldorf's calling card. Frank O. Gehry is just one of the well-known architects who have designed buildings there.
Other big names like Joseph Beuys or Markus Lueppertz are connected with Dusseldorf's world-renowned Art Academy. The city is also a center for fashion and boasts 50 established designers as well as around 100 young, up-and-coming stylemakers.
Koenigsallee, one of the most expensive shopping thoroughfares in Germany, attests to the Dusseldorfers' love of elegance. Yet visitors stopping for a refreshing Altbier in one of the taverns in the old part of town will still find plenty of traditional Rhineland exuberance.
