Explosives in the Baltic - A Legacy from the Second World War - pp 24.09.2007

In 1945 both the Allies and the Germans scuppered tons of explosives and chemical weapons in the Baltic. No one is really sure of the exact quantities of these dangerous substances nor their precise location. To date, no systematic investigations have been carried out in Germany. Environmental protection groups say the state government of Schleswig-Holstein has played down the danger even though there was another dangerous incident this summer. Children playing on the beach of the island of Fehmarn received burns after coming into contact with phosphorus that had been washed onto land. No one appears to feel responsible for tackling this issue.
