June 3, 2015

Unemployment in the 19-member euro area keeps edging down. Fresh data from the bloc's statistics agency show that joblessness has hit a new low as the eurozone struggles to return to solid growth.

Eurozone unemployment fell to 11.1 percent in April, the EU statistics agency Eurostat reported Wednesday.

The figure marked only a slight drop from the 11.2 percent logged in the previous month but it was still the lowest level seen in three years.

Despite the renewed dip, almost 18 million people were still out of work in the single currency area.

Problem child Greece

Eurostat pointed out that youth unemployment remained stubbornly high in many member countries, with the jobless rate among young people amounting to 22.3 percent in April.

The agency added the lowest overall jobless rate was recorded in Germany where 4.7 percent of the working population was unemployed in April. By contrast, Greece had the bloc's highest rate of over 25 percent.

In the wider 28-member European Union, unemployment stood at 9.7 percent in the same month, unchanged from revised figures for March - meaning that 23.5 million people were out of work.
